The successful operation in Tagum City on January 31, 2025, is a powerful example of the excellent coordination between the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine National Police (PNP). This joint effort, which involved several AFP and PNP units, demonstrated how their combined strength can effectively maintain peace and security, especially with the upcoming elections in mind.
Norman Saquin and Rozendel Cañete, both wanted for murder and illegal possession of firearms, were the primary targets of this operation. These individuals are believed to be part of a gun-for-hire syndicate that could disrupt the smooth conduct of the 2025 national and local elections. As the country prepares for the elections, the AFP and PNP have ramped up their efforts to apprehend individuals like Saquin and Cañete, who pose a significant threat to public safety.
The operation was carried out by forces from the 60th Infantry Battalion, 1001st Infantry Brigade, 25th Infantry Battalion, and various PNP units, including the Davao del Norte Provincial Police Office. Their effective coordination proved essential when the suspects opened fire during the execution of the arrest warrants. Despite the exchange of gunfire, which resulted in injuries to some of the arresting officers, the AFP and PNP operatives were able to neutralize both Saquin and Cañete.
Brigadier General Babac, commander of the 1001st Infantry Brigade, Philippine Army, said that this operation shows the AFP and PNP’s commitment to neutralizing threats to public safety, particularly individuals who could be hired to disrupt the election process. He pointed out that under the COMELEC’s mandate, the AFP is responsible for addressing any acts of terrorism or intimidation that may threaten the integrity of the elections.
Major General Hambala, Division Commander of the 10th Infantry Division, Philippine Army also commended the smooth coordination between the AFP and PNP units involved. He expressed confidence that this successful operation would contribute to a safer and more orderly election season in Davao del Norte and Davao de Oro.
I personally witnessed the leadership of Major General Allan Hambala and Brigadier General Ronnie Babac during the landslide in Brgy. Masara, Davao de Oro, last February. Even then, they worked together flawlessly—much like Batman and Robin—coordinating their efforts with great precision and determination. Their strong leadership, evident in that crisis, is now clearly reflected in this operation. It proves that they can handle even the toughest challenges. This operation stands as a reminder of the value of their teamwork and their commitment to ensuring a peaceful and secure 2025 election.
