CONSIDER EYE VISION CORRECTION SURGERY?
ALTHOUGH DIAGNOSTIC TEST RESULT SAYS THAT YOU CAN’T HAVE LASIK OR LASEK, YOU MAY HAVE ICL (IMPLANTABLE COLLAMAR LENS) SURGERY.” – Dr. Park Joon-sung

Dr. Joon-sung Park, from Samsung Miracle Eye Clinic in Gangnam, Seoul, South Korea will share his thoughts and opinion for those who are considering to have eye vision surgery here in the Philippines.
Here are some of the excerpts from the interview with Dr. Park.
Would you tell me about yourself?
Hi, I am Joon-sung Park, the Chief Director of Samsung Miracle Eye Clinic Gangnam (en.samsungmiracle.co.kr), Seoul, South Korea. Today, I want to introduce the trendy eye vision correction surgery in one of my favorite countries, Philippines. Many Asians are having problems with their eye vision as they get older. I have a childhood experience of getting into accidents where I was very close to losing my eyesight. Since then, my eyes cannot have contact lenses or undergo Vision Correction Surgery. I decided to be an opthalmologist because I am experiencing the importance of eyes more than anybody else. With 23 years of experience as being a doctor, I will be responsible for the lifetime vision that the patients can be satisfied after the eyesight correction. And I will prioritize the safety of the patients without any overtreatments based on the high understanding and expert experiences built over many years.
What kind of surgeries do you offer?

All kinds of eye related surgeries such as LASIK, LASEK, SMILE, Cataract and Presbyopia. But before you have these surgeries, you must undergo diagnostic scans and evaluations that will allow us to recommend the right procedure for you and customize the treatment plan according to your individual needs. We are able to measure the thickness of your cornea, take a picture inside of your eye to see your retina, and check on your overall eye health as well.
What is the trendiest surgery in Korea?
It depends on the result of the diagnostic scan and evaluations.

For the young generation, SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction) surgery is the most popular. It was calculated at the end of last year to have performed over 1 million eyes in Korea and currently 8 million eyes worldwide. This surgery is more familiar to patients as ‘Smile Lasik’.
Presbyopia and Cataracts, which threaten the eyesight of the elderly, can be simultaneously improved with intraocular lens implantation. As people age, their eyesight deteriorates and symptoms of ‘presbyopia’ appear, making it difficult to see close objects or letters. However, you must be careful because symptoms that are overlooked as presbyopia may be problems caused by cataracts. Presbyopia and cataracts are both problems caused by abnormalities in the lens, but cataracts can lead to blindness and cause serious complications such as glaucoma, so early diagnosis and treatment are necessary.
How does it work? Are those procedures safe?
Yes, those are clinically proven safest surgeries.
For the SMILE LASIK, is performed using only one laser. During treatment, the laser gently creates a thin, contact-lens-shaped layer (called a ‘lenticule’) just beneath the eye’s surface. The lenticule is removed through a tiny opening made by the laser. This changes the overall shape of the cornea, thereby correcting your vision.
For the Cataract surgery, the procedure starts by removing the eye’s natural lens and replacing with an advanced, customized intraocular lens. Both eyes are typically done on the same day, and patients often report a rapid improvement in vision over the following days. The goal of cataract surgery is to provide a full range of quality vision.
Why do you think patients are getting eye vision correction surgery in South Korea?
There are several reasons why patients travel to Korea for vision correction surgery.

First, the same advanced technology, such as VisuMax laser, WaveLight EX500, Femto LDV Z8 and OPMI LUMERA 700+Callisto eye are used to perform the surgeries. Those state-of-the-art equipment and specialist will provide you the best result.
Second, the surgery is much more affordable compared to other countries. For example, in the USA, you are expected to pay 2,000~3,000 USD per eye for SMILE LASIK while in Korea, SMILE LASIK only costs 2,500~3,500 USD for BOTH eyes.

Third, doctors in Korea have more experience in performing vision correction surgeries. Samsung Miracle Eye Clinic has performed more than 100,000 cases of SMILE LASIK from a total of 8,000,000 cases worldwide.

Fourth, many options! You can find the suitable and ideal surgery for your eyes such as ICL (Implantable Collamar Lens), SMILE LASIK, LASEK and etc.
