In the recent Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) 2023, the Philippines witnessed a cinematic spectacle that not only entertained but also shattered records. Proposed Senate Resolution No. 909, sponsored by Senator Robinhood Padilla, echoes the sentiments of the nation as it congratulated and commended the artists and production team of the film Rewind for achieving the remarkable feat of becoming the highest-grossing Filipino film of all time.
The MMFF, an annual tradition since 1975, has been a crucial platform for promoting locally-made films and fostering the growth of the Philippine film industry. Despite facing setbacks due to the global pandemic in 2020, last year’s MMFF aimed to reignite the passion for cinema. The 2023 MMFF not only met but surpassed expectations, officially becoming the highest-grossing edition to date.
The success of Rewind, directed by Mae Cruz-Alviar and starring Dingdong Dantes and Marian Rivera-Dantes, stands out as a beacon of hope for the industry. The film garnered an astounding P815 million in domestic sales as of January 17, 2024, solidifying its place as a cinematic milestone.
The Senate resolution recognized Dingdong Dantes and Marian Rivera-Dantes beyond their on-screen prowess, as they “serve as inspiration, not only as artists on screen but also as one of the inspiring couple celebrities championing family values, entrepreneurship, and philanthropic deeds to help our fellow countrymen.”
Senator Padilla’s sponsorship on Senate Resolution No. 900 congratulating and commending the artists and production team of the highest-grossing Filipino film of all time, reflects the Senate’s collective acknowledgment of the film’s cultural and economic significance. Prior to the resolution, the Senate approved on Third Reading Senate Bill No. 2505, or the Eddie Garcia Bill, authored also by Senator Padilla, which “institutes policies for the protection of movie and television workers.
The Senate resolution pays homage to the undeniable impact of Rewind on the revitalization of the Philippine film industry. The speeches by Senators Revilla, Villanueva, Dela Rosa, Hontiveros, and Zubiri further amplify the acclaim for the film. Each senator shared personal anecdotes, resonating with the audience and underscoring the film’s ability to evoke genuine emotions and reflections on life’s profound intricacies.
Senate President Zubiri shared that his family highly praised the film and mentioned his intention to attend a special screening of the movie later that week. He expressed hope for the realization of plans of having two film festivals annually.
Thus, as we celebrate the achievements of ‘Rewind,’ we also recognize the broader implications for the Filipino film industry. The resounding success of the MMFF 2023 signals a resurgence, proving that, even in challenging times, the magic of cinema can captivate hearts, bring people to theaters, and contribute significantly to the nation’s cultural and economic tapestry.
