PHILIPPINE PEDIATRIC AND ADOLESCENT SOCIETIES’ CALL TO ACTION

The tragic loss of young lives to recent incidents of school violence has sent shockwaves through the Philippines, sparking an urgent call to action.

In a powerful joint statement issued on June 29, 2026, the Philippine Pediatric Society (PPS) and the Philippine Society of Adolescent Medicine Specialists (PSAMS) extended their deepest condolences to the bereaved families while sounding an alarm on a growing public health crisis.

The medical groups emphasize that school violence is a complex issue fueled by interconnected factors like family stress, social isolation, unmet mental health needs, and access to firearms. Most importantly, they advocate for a child-sensitive justice system rooted in rehabilitation and restorative justice for accused adolescents, rather than purely punitive measures.

To understand the gravity of the situation, they present data based on the 2024 Philippines Global School-based Student Health Survey conducted among 13- to 17-year-olds showing that violence and hostility are shockingly prevalent in the daily lives of Filipino youth.

The data reveals that 42.0% of males and 28.3% of females had been involved in a physical fight at least once in the past year. Furthermore, 30.2% of students reported being bullied within school walls, while 22.2% experienced the relentless pressure of cyber-bullying. These statistics underscore that severe tragedies are often the escalation of unaddressed everyday hostilities.

Addressing this crisis requires what the PPS and PSAMS call an “all hands on deck” approach. The societies outline clear, evidence-based recommendations for all sectors. Physicians are urged to routinely screen adolescents for psychosocial risks and promote positive parenting. Parents and caregivers must foster nurturing homes, model emotional regulation, and watch for warning signs like withdrawal or declining grades.

Finally, government agencies—including the DOH, DepEd, DSWD, and LGUs—must urgently collaborate to establish robust, adolescent-friendly health services and psychosocial screening directly within educational institutions.

Since safety is a collective responsibility, we must wholeheartedly endorse this clinical blueprint to ensure our youth can learn in peace.
