My Most Favorite Humanitarian Worker
In every organization dedicated to public service, there are individuals who quietly work behind the scenes. Their dedication ensures that missions succeed and communities are served, even if their names are seldom mentioned.
One of them is Marnovem “Vemm” Bahian, known to many of us simply as Bunso. He’s the kind of person anyone would like to befriend, even adopt, because of his warmth, humility, and kindness. He has been the quiet force behind humanitarian operations of his and his other partner organizations across the Philippines and beyond.
For years, Vemm has served as a coordinator and mission lead for the Mindanao Humanitarian Volunteers for Peace (MHVP), a volunteer network composed mainly of medical professionals known for their consistent relief and peace-building work in the most geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas (GIDAs) of the Philippines. From remote barangays in Sulu, Tawi-Tawi, Basilan, Zamboanga, Bukidnon, and Palawan, to small islands and mountain villages few have reached, he has personally ensured that food and medicine reached those who needed them most. He has crossed rivers, climbed hills, entered conflict-affected zones, slept on the oily floors of Navy ships and in thatched huts in Sulu — always focused on the mission of service, never on personal credit.
When the MJB Cares Foundation — his primary volunteer organization — expanded its programs to include medical missions, educational outreach, feeding activities, and livelihood assistance in partnership with MHVP, it was again Vemm who became the steady hand behind nearly 50 missions nationwide since 2017. He managed volunteers, verified beneficiary lists, coordinated with barangay leaders and tribal elders, handled logistics, and ensured that every mission was conducted transparently.
Volunteers often share the same story: “Vemm organized everything; we just showed up and served.”
Within DDCPH, his leadership took on a more strategic role. Serving in a Chief-of-Staff capacity, he helped design internal systems and communication processes that strengthened organizational operations. He acted as the bridge between teams, leaders, and partner institutions, ensuring that the organization’s goals consistently translated into action.
In a field where many strive to be seen, Vemm stands out by leading quietly and effectively, always with compassion and respect for the less privileged.
