A NATION DIVIDED BY EMOTIONS

The ongoing International Criminal Court (ICC) investigation into former President Rodrigo Duterte, particularly regarding his controversial war on drugs, has sparked significant debate. Duterte’s anti-drug campaign, launched in 2016, allegedly resulted in thousands of extrajudicial killings, prompting the ICC to investigate potential crimes against humanity. As expected, the inquiry has divided public opinion, with staunch supporters defending Duterte’s actions while critics condemn them as human rights violations.

A vocal and visible segment of Duterte’s loyal supporters, many from the masses, continues to stand firmly by him. For these individuals, the ICC investigation is seen as an affront to Philippine sovereignty. They argue that Duterte’s campaign against illegal drugs was critical in addressing the nation’s long-standing narcotics problem. Supporters contend that while his methods were harsh, they were necessary to restore peace and order in communities once plagued by crime.

The not-so-silent majority is now showing its support online and in person. Many have changed their social media profile pictures to images of themselves with the former president, or post the Philippine flag with a crying eye as a symbol of solidarity. Transport drivers, market vendors, and various members of the working class express how much safer they felt during Duterte’s presidency, particularly at night. Today, with reports of rising crime rates, these individuals fear the progress achieved under Duterte is slipping away. For them, the war on drugs, despite its brutal tactics, was justified in its goal of protecting law-abiding citizens.

In Davao and other parts of the country, protesters have taken to the streets to show their support for Duterte. Demonstrations have also emerged outside the International Court of Justice near The Hague, where overseas Filipino workers and Duterte allies display their solidarity. Alongside these demonstrators, a quieter group commiserates with the former president, viewing him as a strong leader facing politically motivated charges. These supporters feel deeply connected to Duterte and believe he acted in the country’s best interest.

To Duterte’s loyal followers, the ICC’s involvement is viewed as unwarranted foreign interference. They argue that as a sovereign nation, the Philippines should manage its own internal affairs. While Duterte’s detractors see his legacy as a warning about unchecked power, his supporters continue to regard him as a hero who took decisive action for the nation’s benefit. As the ICC case progresses, this divide only deepens, shaping the future of the country’s political and social landscape.
